A 1981 commercial for Fran oil filters used the catchy yet popular slogan “you can pay me now, or you can pay me later.” The message, of course, was that a customer could pay a small sum now for replacement of oil and filter, or pay a much larger sum later for the replacement of the vehicle’s engine.
Kennett Square council Monday night opted for the pay it now option, agreeing to spend nearly a quarter of a million dollars to rehabilitate the 348-space parking garage at Linden and Union Streets.
The renovation to the parking garage, originally constructed at a cost of $5.9 million, will be finished by the end of the year.
Brant Kucera, borough manager, said funding for the renovation was approved in the borough’s 2013 budget.
“Once we do routing maintenance on the facility, it should be good for 70 to 75 years,” Kucera said. “This should extend the lifespan of the parking garage.”
Work to be done includes waterproofing both inside and outside, restriping of the parking spaces and sealing the floors. A thorough inspection will also be conducted to check the structure’s integrity.
The cost of repair will come solely from the borough’s parking fund balance. Kucera said the borough will incur no debt to have the work done.
Council’s vote to authorize spending money for the rehabilitation was unanimous.
